People always ask about music licenses on filmmaking boards but has anyone here actually ever negotiated with publishers to use a song in one of their films?
I know you have to say you're a student blah blah, and so on but how much does it cost?

Anyone ever paid for song use in a film? If so, how much?

The Bulls-eye tune costs little over 3p a minute...remember; it might be old, but its pure gold.

    Why do you ask?

Thanks for your replies....I guess it gives me the top and bottom of the market.

I need 'Toploader - Achillees Heel' for a film. I assume its cheaper if you play it yourself?

depends on the profile of the band, Bands Ive asked:
Tiger Lillies, and Amon Tobin - they both asked about the same (100 - 200 pounds a year for UK festivals, maybe more for European fests) - although it may depend on the project.

try the PRS (performing rights society), but it all depends on how it is used, if its just going to get seen by your mates - dont bother with the hassle. if you are going to get it distributed, then the production/distrubution company wont touch it with a ten foot barge pole if you havent cleard the rights to music... but.. if you plan to get it noticed but wont make any money then thats a grey area.. or get some f?cking talented composer to do the job for you

hope this is of some help matey

    Question

if you are UK based then talk to the Mechanical Protection Copyright Soceity (do a search on google) they deal with all this stuff and can put you in contact with who owns the copyright etc etc as well as doing searches etc

    for the record,

for my film Mortus Illumina, i want to use a gospel track called "Take My Hand Precious Lord" circa 1936, ive been quoted ?10'000 for that use, but its like anything in this industry it comes down to negotiation, the amount i will pay will be more ?300 - ?400 region

Ho sh|t. Toploader will cost a bomb then!

Still, I can always do an edit without, and compose something for it instead.

Thanks for the search rec though.
